8th Grade & FRESHMAN YEAR

·  Establish strong study habits

·  Establish good time management techniques

·  Keep your post-secondary plans in mind when scheduling your classes

·  Consider an interesting summer job or volunteer program

  • Research career information and explore your own career interests on gacollege411.org

  • Talk with your counselor about the classes that will prepare you for your choice of colleges and career.

  • Learn about the different types of college entrance requirements and create a plan that will enable you to meet them. Focus on the college admissions tests that you will be expected to take.

· Get involved with a small number of extracurricular activities at school, church and/or community.

· Work closely with TEAMS teacher

SOPHOMORE YEAR

·  Email post-secondary institutions and ask for materials.

·  Improve study habits and time management.

·  Enhance reading ability, writing ability and vocabulary.

·  Plan your junior schedule carefully, attempt challenging classes.

·  Target major activities, look for leadership positions, performances, events, awards.

·  Keep Gacollege411.com account current.

·  Talk with post-secondary reps as they visit your school.

·  Talk with you teachers about their post-secondary experiences.

·  Take the PSAT.

·  Inventory what interests you. . .relate this to possible career choices. Do career interest surveys.

·  Do your best on school-based achievement tests.

  • Meet with your counselor to review your past grades, current classes and ultimate college and/or career goals.

  • Take initiative!

  • Continue to participate in extracurricular activities at school, church and/or community.

·  Work closely with TEAMS teacher

JUNIOR YEAR

·  Keep your grades up.

·  Continue extra-curricular involvement.

·  Plan senior year schedule carefully...be career specific.

·  Actively investigate at least 3 careers.

·  Prepare for and Excel on GHSGT!

·  Meet with guidance counselor about post-secondary planning procedures.

·  Label a file "Post-Secondary Planning" and keep everything in it.

·  Begin researching scholarship sources.

·  Develop a list of 5 potential post-secondary institutions in which you are interested.

·  Begin to explore financial aid opportunities.

·  Take ACT or SAT tests if needed.

  • Update your high school planner on gacollege411.org

  • Compare your current academic standing and already fulfilled graduation requirements with  college entrance requirements for your choice of colleges.

  • Take the PSAT.

  • Consider taking leadership roles in your extracurricular activities.

  • Work closely with TEAMS teacher.

  • Visit campuses during your Junior Year!

 

SENIOR YEAR

·  Keep your grades up - THIS IS AN IMPORTANT YEAR!

·  Continue extra-curricular involvement.

·  Continue investigating career options.

·  Actively involve parents in planning.

·  Regularly meet with your Counselor.

·  Visit with institution reps when they are on campus.

·  Research institutional choices, narrow the field.

·  Keep abreast of files, announcements, workshops, fliers, guests, etc. that are involved in the post-secondary planning process.

·  Systematically work on applications; be aware of deadlines and write for financial aid packages.

  • Review high school graduation requirements and your high school transcript with your counselor.

  • Take/Retake the SAT or ACT if required for your college selection.

  • Mark college admissions and financial aid deadlines on your calendar.

  • Research scholarship opportunities.

  • Narrow your list of interested colleges to 3.

  • Complete and submit college admissions paperwork.

  • Apply to the US department of Education for a PIN for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

  • Meet with Patti White about Financial Aid.

  • Complete and submit your FAFSA by February 15.

·  If required, submit updated transcripts to your 3 colleges.

·  RESEARCH DEADLINES (application and financial aid) FOR INDIVIDUAL COLLEGES – MAKE SURE YOU MEET THEM!

·  Check status of college application frequently.

·  Visit Campuses!

  • Work closely with TEAMS teacher.
